Helpful Forgiveness Hint

Start SmallWhen starting to be a forgiver (someone who forgives consistently), try to begin with hurts that are not so large. It is not unlike starting an exercise program. If you try to run 5 miles the first day or to bench press too much weight too soon, you get quite sore, quite discouraged, and may stop exercising. If you start slowly, you build up strength so that you can handle the longer run or the challenging bench press. Start forgiving someone who has not gravely hurt you and work up to those who have.

But if we forgive over and over, might the one forgiven start taking advantage of us? They might see us as weak. I think I will ask a question like this in your Ask Dr Forgiveness section so you will answer it.

I have been trying to climb the mountain of forgiveness with my father and it has proven too hard. Thank you for the idea to take step back. I will focus on less challenging one. This should help.

One small step at a time can make a big difference for the one forgiving and the one forgiven. I think this approach would make it easier to forgive the worst offenses later on.

I started at the mountain top and now I understand why it was so hard. I was discouraged. I will try this and see—-smaller steps first. Thank you.

I realize that I am not in such great shape in terms of forgiveness. I better take some serious laps around the forgiveness track.
